  • Why am I in Graduate School
Metacognition:  What is the process?  How do we learn?  Cognition about cognition.  Understanding own capabilities... one's own capability for using strategies to learn.  (Beem, 2015).

Metacognition

Thinking about one owns thinking.  Understanding one's own capabilities.   One's own capability for using strategies to learn information, remember, and recall.

New technology adds opportunities to connect with other people around the world.  It can create complex problems and dependencies.

Assignment:  read; write essay; and critique two essays from teammates.  After reading my Introduction Statement, please write a short response.  Feel free to discuss your background, what you want to get out of this class/program and introduce yourself to the class. Please include any reactions that you have to my statement.  Module 1 - Introduction Statement
After you have submitted your response, write a short reply to two (2) of your classmates' posts. Just point out something interesting that was mentioned and have fun.

Why are you in the MIST program?  What are your real objectives?  I am sure that getting a better job and making more money are considerations, but I hope there is more to it than these considerations.

You are stepping into a field that values life-long learning and demands cooperation and flexibility. I would ask you to really think about your motives for this program, because your chances of success are greatly increased if you have an intrinsic motivation to learn, to grow, and to strive to be better than you are. In this program you will have many opportunities to make mistakes.“

Assignment each week:  Recommend one useful resource (an app, a website, a professional blog...) to your peers in this week's forum below. Provide a brief instruction on where to access/download, who should use it, and why it is good.

M2.1 SWOT Analysis of Weebly

SWOT is an acronym.  An abbreviation formed from the words; strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats.  The analysis of Weebly is used to evaluate the application.

Fall 2015 the beginning of the CSUMB MIST Graduate Program.  The SWOT Analysis of the application Weebly.  Weebly was selected to build my e-portfolio, and my assessment is written below. The graphic to the right was is my SWOT Analysis.

Fall 2016, during are second year of our CSUMB MIST Graduate Program.   A new SWOT Analysis is written below of a detailed assessment.  Weebly has provided new applications to enhance our e-portfolios.  Most are free, others have a modest fee.  My new Weebly SWOT Analysis was built using the Table App provided by Weebly.

Fall 2015 SWOT Analysis by Dana Payne
SWOT Analysis of the interactive learning module selected for our Capstone Project.
(posted in Capstone/ IST 699)
From your research of the two options in authoring tools, Adobe Captivate or Articulate Storyline, create a report of your findings using a SWOT analysis.  You may compare them against each other, or you may simply choose one and report on its Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats...in respect to what you would like to be able to accomplish in your Capstone project deliverable.
Research this week enough to decide which tool you will want to use, and to get a sense of available options for learning to use the tool.  And also, be thinking about what you expect the tool to be able to do for your capstone project.
Write your thoughts in a reflection and post to your ePortfolio as "My choice for the authoring tool for creating my interactive learning module (ILM)."

Areas to consider: (You can use some, all, or add to the following.  They are just to give you ideas to consider in making your choice.)

Proposed Interactive Learning Module/Capstone Project
  • Explain what you think you want to be able to do for your Capstone project...and how computer-aided instruction might be used for some or all of the instruction.
  • State which authoring tool you chose.

Strengths
  • What features or things can the selected authoring tool do that you would want to use in your interactive learning module of instruction?
  • List and rate any learning resources and support for learning to use this tool that your research has revealed. Which of these options would work best for you and how you learn?  Which of these have examples that relate to what you are trying to create?
  • List and rate resources for getting tech help and user group support when the tool has a glitch...or does not work the way it should?

Weaknesses:
  • What are features or things that the tool cannot do, which you will need to give up on using or find other ways of doing?
  • Your estimate of the learning curve to be able to use the tool to accomplish what you wish?
  • Other weaknesses?

Opportunities:
  • What can this type of tool do for your project that you had not considered before?
  • What new opportunities might they give you, or your learners?

Threats:
  • What problems, issues, threats does trying to use this authoring tool bring to your project?
  • How might you work around or mitigate some of these potential threats?
  • What don't you know about this tool that you feel you need more information on to protect yourself?
Note: you are encouraged to work with your teammates to gather resources and sources.  You can then spend more time reviewing them and their impact on what you want to be able to do.
Also, some of you may ultimately do a research project for your capstone rather than create instruction...and some of you may find that neither of the authoring tools will serve your ultimate needs.  But you still must learn enough of how to use an authoring tool in order to complete the required interactive learning module that you will create in the Spring.  Knowing how to create a rapid prototype will serve you well in your future as an instructional designer or technologist!  Beem, C. (2015).
